Literacy for Civic Life (LCL) Teacher Fellowship

Build student civic literacy in ELA and Social Studies classrooms through rigorous, standards-driven reading, writing, and discussion.

Literacy for Civic Life (LCL) is a year-long cohort-based professional learning fellowship for secondary teachers that pairs C3-aligned, inquiry-focused rigorous curricular experiences with job-embedded professional learning as part of a national community of practice.

LCL equips teachers to truly enact C3 inquiry and critical thinking and prepares students to grapple with complex primary sources, engage in productive civil disagreement, and produce high-quality writing—all in service of improving their ability to navigate civic life in the 21st century.

Do you have a video that can explain in more detail the work of the fellowship?

Below is a video that was used to recruit teachers into the 2024-25 pilot version of the LCL program.

How do I know if I'm eligible to participate in the fellowship?
Any Grade 6-12 ELA or Social Studies teacher (or any teachers who can implement several short units of literacy instruction cenetered around key non-fiction texts from U.S. History and Civics) can participate, provided that they have approval from their school's leadership. LCL is an individual teacher fellowship, so it does not require participation beyond the teacher or teachers in a school or district who participate.

After applying for the fellowship, LDC will let you know if you are eligible. You will not be enrolled until your school's leadership has approved and the enrollment fee has been paid.
How do these curricular modules fit into my existing curriculum map or scope and sequence?
LDC has over 100 curricular modules to select from, spanning a wide variety of topics, skills, texts, and themes. The full list of modules can be viewed here.

These modules go deep into the key topic(s) and text(s) featured in the modules, and take 7-10 days of instruction to implement. Teachers are supported in selecting and incoporating into the curriculum maps two of the modules to teach over the course of a school year so that student impact is maximized without taking away from covering the teachers' scopes and sequences.
