New AIR Brief: Deeper Learning; Improving Student Outcomes for College, Career, and Civic Life

August 19th, 2015

A member of the original LDC Design Team, Eleanor Dougherty is an educator and author. She has a long career in education as a teacher in K–12 and college systems and with education agencies, including the U.S. Department of Education and the Education Trust. Since 2004, Eleanor has worked as a consultant to foundations, non-profits, state agencies, districts, and schools. She continues her LDC design work, expanding it into the development of online courses and curriculum maps.

Deeper Learning: Improving Student Outcomes
for College, Career, and Civic Life, a new brief by researchers at the Education Policy Center at American Institutes for Research (AIR) that discusses the need for students to build competencies for success in education and the workforce, presents experiences and contexts for improving student achievement and engaging students in "deeper learning."

The brief lists five strategies that are perfect settings for LDC tasks:
project-based learning, collaborative group work, internships, a portfolio assessment system, and structures that support deeper learning. Some of the schools and networks referenced in the study use LDC tools or are LDC partners.

I recommend reading this publication to help “stir your imagination” about how LDC tools can help you implement any of these strategies.
