National Board for Professional Teaching Standards

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (National Board) was established as the profession’s vehicle for defining and recognizing accomplished teaching. National Board Standards are created by teachers, for teachers, as is National Board Certification, a voluntary process to certify teachers against those standards.

Recognized as the gold standard in teacher certification, the National Board believes higher standards for teachers means better learning for students.

The founding mission of the National Board is to advance the quality of teaching and learning by:

  • Maintaining high and rigorous standards for what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do;

  • Providing a national voluntary system certifying teachers who meet these standards;

  • Advocating related education reforms to integrate National Board Certification in American education and to capitalize on the expertise of National Board Certified Teachers.

How the National Board Supports Implementation of LDC Tools

National Board supports educators in their pursuit of accomplished practice. The National Board Certified Teachers and LDC experts who laid the groundwork for this partnership believe LDC competencies and tools are valuable resources for educators engaged in that pursuit.  These meet the needs of all students as they work towards college- and career-ready standards.

Experience With LDC

LDC and National Board share a belief that teachers have the professional wisdom to design and guide standards-based professional learning. Another shared belief is that every child, every day deserves an accomplished teacher.

To that end and with the support of both organizations, practicing teachers and teacher educators created resources in LDC CoreTools that unpack the connection between the competencies and practices teachers learn through LDC and those that are articulated in National Board Standards of accomplished practice.

These resources were created by teachers, for teachers and so are focused on areas of teaching that are critical for meeting the needs of all students, namely: differentiation, reflection, and the cycle teachers engage in as they focus all instruction on the needs of their students in their own contexts.

Resources in LDC CoreTools

National Board has three courses housed within the Learn section of LDC CoreTools, a mini-task template, and National Board mini-tasks.
