The Kentucky Department of Education’s mission is to prepare all Kentucky students for next-generation learning, work, and citizenship by engaging schools, districts, families, and communities through excellent leadership, service, and support.
Through a teacher leadership network designed for professional learning as well as an Integrated Strategy for College and Career Readiness, the Kentucky Department of Education provides ongoing professional learning in support of standards implementation and the use of the Literacy Design Collaborative tools.
The Kentucky Department of Education partners with districts, state consultants, and technical assistance providers to scale LDC as a primary vehicle for implementing standards. KDE consultants and coaches collaborate with district leadership teams, including teacher leaders, to design and implement professional learning plans focused on standards implementation and the use of the LDC tools, all in support of continuous improvement of instruction and educator effectiveness.
Kentucky districts and teachers were the first to pilot and implement the LDC tools. The KDE has been a partner in this work since the beginning and has developed a cadre of consultants and coaches to support districts in the implementation of standards and the use of the LDC tools.

The Common Assignment Study is a long-term study of teachers in two states designing instructional units together—based on LDC modules—led by the Colorado Education Initiative and The Fund for Transforming Education in Kentucky with support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Participating teachers will develop and teach two instructional units per year that exemplify the content knowledge and skills embedded in the Colorado Academic Standards and Kentucky Core Academic Standards.
Research partners involved in the project include the Center for Assessment, Westat, Research for Action, and the Stanford Center for Assessment, Learning and Equity (SCALE)—which is facilitating the work of the teachers. The education departments in both states are also participating in the project.
